About Cokoha
Our mission is to create more connected communities by fostering mahi tahi, caring for our whenua, sharing koha, and assisting those in need through holistic and sustainable practices. The following tikanga, or values, guide Community Koha in achieving its common cause.
Whakawhanaungatanga
To us this means establishing and building relationships within communities.
We are establishing relationships with charities, businesses and people across Aotearoa. Connecting these groups to each other to establish stronger relationships within their communities.
Kotahitanga
To us this means togetherness, and unity without any prejudice on culture, or other differences.
We hope our app will unify people, bringing people from all walks of life together for one common cause - helping each other regardless of their status.
Manaakitanga
To us this tikanga reflects values of hospitality, kindness, generosity and respect, extending aroha to others.
We hope to give people a place to extend their generosity, aroha and kindness to their community.
Kaitiakitanga
This tikanga reflects the values that the whenua is a taonga and we as people are guardians over it protecting it, living mindfully, respectfully and more sustainably.
We hope to encourage people to be more mindful, to donate rather than throw away or to waste. Less waste, leads to more sustainable outcomes for the environment, and our future.

Frequently asked questions
Will people feel comfortable enough to exchange donations at their households?
There are risks involved, such as trusting the quality of food. To address this, we have established food quality guidelines that individuals must adhere to before donating food. While there are no legal regulations for free goods consumption, we've created our own safety declaration.
Numerous trading platforms, like Trademe and Facebook Marketplace, have made the exchange of goods commonplace, indicating that the practice is feasible.
For the delivery of goods, alternative options can be chosen, such as contactless pickup or drop-off at a shared location like a local pataka charity or school, rather than a residence if preferred.
Users can choose to keep their exact addresses hidden for added privacy.
How does the app directly address relative poverty?
The government has identified 5 CPRI (indicators of poverty), including 'food insecurity', which we aim to tackle.
The app offers a user-friendly platform for those experiencing food insecurity to effortlessly locate food and essential items within their communities. By improving access to food banks, charities, and support services, households may find themselves in a better financial position as the burden of sourcing food is alleviated. Additionally, the app promotes the acceptance of gifted and donated items, reducing the potential stigma and embarrassment that may be felt by those in need when seeking assistance.
How do we measure the apps' impact and effectiveness?
We will measure the app's influence through the following methods:
- In-app data collection to identify general locations, age, sex, ethnicity, and ongoing collection rates, which will be incorporated into the "donator" profile. While data collection will be voluntary for users, it will aid in understanding the app's reach and impact.
- Annual surveys
- Continuous engagement with local Iwi, food networks, and community liaison officers to evaluate the app's effects
- Monitoring waste reduction in the community and collaborating with local councils to analyze data
